An Immunohistochemical Study on the Phytohemagglutinins of Human Gastric Mucoss

Abstract
To evaluate the binding of various hemagglutinins(PHAs) on the normal gastric mucosa, the author had been performed an experiment using Concanavalin A(Con-A), soybean agglutinin (SBA), wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), Dolichos biflorus agglutinin (DBA), Ulex europaeus agglutinin I(UEA I), peanut agglutinin (PNA), Ricinus communis agglutinin I (RCA I) and Pinellia ternata agglutinin (PTA). Every 5 cases of gastric mucosa from body, antral and pyloric portions were obtained by gastrectomy or endoscopic biopsy. The immunohistochemical method used was avidin-biotin system.
The results obtained are as follows;
1. To the foveolar epithelia of gastric mucosae, PNA, SBA, RCA I, and UEA I revealed positive reaction.
2. On the mucous neck cells, WGA and DBA showed positive intracytoplasmic reactions.
3. On the gastric glands of the body portion, Con-A, RCA I, UEA I, DBA and PTA showed
positive reaction. Con-A, WGA, PNA, RCA I, and UEA I revealed positive reaction on
the gastric glands of antral portion.
4. On the glands of intestinal ization, Con-A, WGA, RCA I, UEA I, DBA and PTA showed positive reactions.
With the above results, epithelial cells of the gastric mucosa showed various chemical compositions in their cytoplasmic membranes.
